Advantages of Thin Film Solar Panels

Thin Film May be the Future of Solar Panels

Chances are if you have been keeping up with our blog you have probably heard at least a little bit about thin film solar panels. The newest form of solar panel technology, thin film panels are shaping up to be one of the most versatile, cost efficient, and viable forms of solar panel design. In today’s post, we here at RGS Energy wanted to go over some of the advantages that this exciting new form of solar panel has and what the future looks like if this type of panel is given the level of research and development that it deserves. If you haven’t read our previous posts on monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels, we suggest you go back and do so, however, you do not need to read them in order to gain some information from this blog.

Thin Film is Becoming More Viable

The newest form of solar cell technology, thin film solar panels are quite different from traditional panel designs. These panels are made by depositing a photovoltaic substance onto a solid surface such as glass. The photovoltaic substances use can vary and it has been found that using multiple combinations of substances tends to have a better result than relying on a single substance to produce electricity. While this technology is still considered immature in relation to other panel types, advancements in the next 10 years are projected to make this panel type commercially viable. Below, we have listed some of the advantages that make this particular type of panel so exciting.

  • Easy Production: Of all the solar panel types, thin film panels have the greatest potential in relation to mass production. Because they rely on different photovoltaic substances such as amorphous silicon, copper indium gallium selenide, and cadmium telluride, they are not dependent purely on molten silicon when it comes time for production. Manufacturers simply have to spray these substances onto a glass surface and, viola, a solar panel is born. From a production standpoint, this would greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to make a viable panel.
  • Flexibility: Perhaps one of the most exciting advantages of thin film panels is that they can, theoretically, be produced in many flexible shapes. Because these panels do not rely on rigid silicon cells, the potential applications that they can meet are exciting. Imagine a future where light polls, domes, and other rounded surfaces are able to be outfitted with flexible, thin film solar panels in order to power themselves.
  • Less Affected by Environment: Another great advantage that thin film panels have over traditional panels is the fact that they are not as affected by shade and high temperatures. With other solar panels, great care has to be taken to make sure that they are in an area that receives as much sunlight as possible while simultaneously avoiding all shade. Thin film panels, because of the photovoltaic materials used, are able to absorb quite a bit of sunlight even if they are covered by shade. Additionally, because they are better able to resist high temperatures, these panels may be able to once and for all solve the problem of ambient heat in relation to solar panel output.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing: Another advantage these panels have over other types of panels is the fact that they are uniform in appearance, meaning that are a great option for individuals who are worried about the aesthetic look of their home. More than any other panel, thin film panels are homogenous in appearance because the photovoltaic coating is sprayed on rather than crafted piece by piece.
