Monocrystalline Panels are Popular for a Reason
Solar panels have, in the last few decades especially, come a long way. A technology that was once considered too expensive and too inefficient to be a viable source of energy production on any sort of scale is suddenly becoming one of the major talking points of the renewable energy movement. It truly is an amazing thing to watch this technology grow and, here at RGS Energy, we feel lucky to have been able to be involved with solar energy for as long as we have. In past posts, we have gone over the differences between the three main types of solar cells and what makes them unique. In today’s post, we are going to hone in on monocrystalline panels in particular and go over a few advantages that this particular type of solar panel has over other. We hope that by the end of this post you have a better understanding of the advantages you can expect from monocrystalline solar panels.
Monocrystalline is the Oldest Form of Solar Panel
As we discussed in our previous blog, monocrystalline panels are the oldest and most developed of all the different panel types. As a result, monocrystalline panels have been given the lion’s share of attention from the research and development teams, resulting in panels that are about as efficient as they come. In addition to their efficiency, we have listed a few more advantages that these panels are able to provide to the end user.
- Space Efficient: Of all solar panel types, monocrystalline panels are the most space efficient. Their thin design, high power output, and efficiency levels mean that a person needs less of these panels as compared to other panels to produce the same amount of energy output. Because they require so little space to operate, monocrystalline panels are ideal for individuals who only have a certain amount of space to work with in regard to solar panel placement. Recently, do-it-yourselfers have been placing this type of panel on the roofs of vans, RVs, campers, and other leisure vehicles in order to be able to power their accessories.
- Long Life Span: Silicon is a very stable and inert material. This means that over its lifespan, a panel made from silicon is going to last for quite a while; in fact, most manufacturers place a 25-year warranty on their panels. Monocrystalline panels, which are made from the highest quality silicone possible, tend to last much longer the manufacturer warranty and, in some cases, people have reported that their panels have lasted closer to 35 years than 25. While all panels tend to have long lifespans, monocrystalline panels, because of the purity of the silicone used, are considered to be the panels with the longest potential lifespan.
- Warm Weather Efficiency: High temperatures, especially high ambient temperatures, can have a serious effect on the efficiency of a solar panel. No matter the type of panel, electricity production will fall as temperatures rise, however, this decrease in efficiency is less severe in monocrystalline panels than in other types of panels. This is due to the fact that the silicone used in these panels is, once again, purer than other types of panels, meaning that they can handle more heat than other, less pure panels.
- Innovation: Perhaps one of the greatest advantages of monocrystalline panels is the fact that, because they are already the most efficient type of panel on the market, more time and energy is devoted to them. When researchers are looking for ways to increase the efficiency of solar panels, they are mostly looking for ways to increase the efficiency of monocrystalline panels. While other types of panels have made gains in the efficiency department, monocrystalline still reigns supreme.
